I was talking to a client today who made the statement “I hate change"
This was an interesting concept. It was also a blanket statement
Often when we say something like this, we’re not actually meaning what we say
Bare with me for a second
So I asked him: what exactly do you not like about change?
He replied “feeling unsure. I hate feeling unconfident about so many things. I like to feel in control of whatever I can be"
That’s a lot deeper than “I hate change”, isn’t it
I went on to ask “Is worrying about what you can’t control going to change that you can’t control it"
No…. He replied
Cool… Now we were getting somewhere
Then I asked him “how do you feel when your body is changing. When its tightening and toning and your strength is going up. That’s all change"
He had never thought of it like that before
Often when we make blanket statements we are putting ourselves in a box
It’s like saying “I’m an introvert"
You’ve just accepted that this is reality and that there’s no way to change it
You ALWAYS have a choice
The first step to growth is stepping out of that box and identifying the root issue
