Sadako Sasaki was born in Japan in the midst of World World II. When she was only two years old, an atomic bomb fell near her home in Hiroshima. Although the explosion blew her her of her bedroom window, she survived.

Sadoko grew into a happy girl, who did well at school and was friendly to everyone. When she was 11 years old, she was diagnosed with leukemia, as a result of the radiation from the bomb that fell just ten years earlier.

While in the hospital, one of her friends told her that if she folded 1,000 paper cranes, her wish for world peace would come true. Sadly, Sadako only managed to fold 644 cranes. She died at the age of 12.

3rd graders folded these cranes in memory of Sadako, and as symbol of a hope for world peace.
